Her love of shadows, highlights and things blowing in the wind has been a continuous theme beginning in childhood and is evident in her series “Wrapture”.
How it began
Montena was born in 1961 in Oklahoma and raised in the Austin, Texas area. At the age of six she inherited her great aunt’s sketchpad and art books which stoked her lifelong love of the arts. She attended North Texas State University as a Fine Art major and transferred to the Art Institute of Houston to specialize in Graphic Art.
Love of design
A love of design and all its facets drew her to a twenty plus year career in the advertising and graphic arts field in the Austin, Dallas and Minneapolis areas. She garnered many awards including the 67th New York Art Directors Annual and a Dallas TOPS Award. She is now dedicated to expressing the themes of transience, resilience and strength that she explores through the media of painting and photography.
Montena is an accomplished painter with numerous sales, commissioned works and awards. She has been an active supporter of the local arts and has sought to nurture children’s artistic talents through teaching in both the public and private sector. She is presently the watercolor instructor at the prestigious Lake Austin Spa and the co-founder of Austin Pro Photo, a commercial photography company in Austin Texas.
